Challenge Background
A successful reforestation operation requires several components, including quality seeds and nurseries, good soil preparation, watering, and protection. Moreover, protection is critical, and fencing is often used to protect young plants against the attacks of both domestic and forest animals as well as humans. However, in the Sahelian countries, imported wire netting is often the only sustainable solution available, as local manufacturing based on recycled objects is frequently too fragile to withstand the harsh climatic conditions and is quickly destroyed by termites. Fencing is often expensive, costing between $5 and $8 per linear meter, due to transport costs. This expense, along with other constraints, limits the possibilities of massive reforestation and the delimitation of spaces for reforestation. Without protection, plants are vulnerable to animal and human aggression, and many will die.
What we are looking for
We are looking for an ecological and economical fencing solution that can effectively protect both individual trees and large areas. This solution should be developed through a process of adaptation, transformation, and valorization of raw materials that are available at the local level.
Solution criteria
Must be termites resistant,
Must be suitable for multiple use,
Cost effective (linear meter must be less than $3)
Must be solid enough to protect trees against stray animals
