Water Scarcity & Availability

Harvesting and saving water

Infrastructure

Water

Challenge Background

SOS Sahel Sudan Organization is working in WASH program since 2010 through drilling and installation of new boreholes, upgrading of existing hand pumps to water yards to increase the accessibility to safe water for the people in remote areas that suffer from shortage water for human and animal consumption. The target areas of interventions have no access to electricity for operating the water pumps so the communities depend on Diesel generators which is high operation cost, high pollution, and short term lifetime or depend on solar power which although is cost effective and environmental friendly, it is in low quality in Sudan. The topographic nature of the target areas shows that no aquifer, all available groundwater is in the cracks so the yield of water is low (from 2-5 m3/h) and the availability of groundwater is very limited.

What we are looking for

We are looking for technologies that can help us harvest water - to construct sand dams in seasonal valleys to decrease the flood of rain water. And an integrated water resources management approaches - solution for miss use of limited water.

Solution criteria

Easy installation/ construction
Environmental friendly
Minimum maintenance
Minimum energy consumption
Low cost
Long term lifetime

What we offer

Support in adopting these techniques at our region through training, data collection, and marketing.

SOS Sahel Sudan

SOS Sahel Sudan

SOS Sahel Sudan is an experienced local NGO with a vision of peace and prosperity for all in Sudan. In North Darfur State we work in several localities focusing on natural resources management (NRM) and prevention of conflicts over natural resources for improved livelihoods and poverty reduction.

SOS Sahel Sudan provides improved seeds, provides tools for 600 farmers in deserted and semi-deserted areas. We train the farmers theoretically and practically to increase their yield through Farmer field schools approach (FFS). We carry out 5-8 training sessions for each group of 25-30 farmers. Despite this intervention, we observe the poor crop yield.
