Innovation Leaders for the Great Green Wall

African Leaders Combating Desertification through Innovation

We are excited to invite key players from the Great Green Wall (GGW) countries, to take part in an exclusive, first-of-its-kind programme. In the programme you will explore new ways of dealing with desert-related challenges through technology and innovation and impact Africa's innovation ecosystem.

This program brings together the current and future innovation leaders from 11 countries of the Great Green Wall to work together to assess burning desertification challenges in their country, and design innovative projects using technology to tackle those needs.

This programme aims to boost the implementation of the GGW (Great Green Wall) Initiative through the identification of desert-related needs, the nurturing and maturing of new ideas and concepts and by connecting innovative technological solutions to the specific needs identified by GGW countries and communities. 


The project will support GGW countries to identify specific challenges in the areas of agriculture, infrastructure, energy and water - including in terms of:

connecting remote communities

All stakeholders will work collaboratively on designing concrete and innovative projects proposals around the identified technologies, which can be presented to interested partners for financing.


This programme is a partnership between the Global Mechanism of the UNCCD , the Great Green Wall Accelerator and DeserTech Innovation Community.

Needs Assessment Online Seminar

Participants will take part in 7 online weekly sessions to effectively identify agriculture, water, infrastructure, and energy challenges in their regions. They will also gain tools to understand the initial conditions for implementation and how to assess potential technologies that can best address their needs.

  • Taking an active part in the 7 online sessions

  • Completing some home assignments between sessions

  • Making yourself available to travel for a 4-day seminar in Israel’s Negev desert

  • Taking active part in the final project-design workshop (1 day)
